Virginia Tech Student Logan Thompson Receives $10,000 Scholarship From Liberty Mutual's Responsible Scholars Program

BOSTON - Logan Thompson, Virginia Polytechnic Institute Class of 2011, was one of five college undergraduates out of 1,000 applicants to win $10,000 from the Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars program. The Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars program awarded scholarships to five qualified students who initiated or had been actively involved in a service or volunteer program that had a widespread impact on campus or in the community.

"We believe that the more people think and talk about responsibility, the more it can affect how we live our daily lives," said Maura Quinn, University Relations Program Manager for Liberty Mutual Group. "There are thousands of students doing great things on campus and in their communities every day and this scholarship is a way for us to reward students like Logan for the difference they are making."

Logan was recognized for raising more than $147,000 by organizing 100 Hokies to run in tribute to the Virginia Tech shootings in conjunction with the annual Marine Corps Marathon. Post-race, Logan worked with the Virginia Tech Foundation and with the marathon money established the Hokie Memorial Marathon Fund, which awards five $1,000 scholarships annually in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
"One needs to look no further than their own school or community to find their own niche and positively impact the lives of others," said Logan. "While we cannot all serve on the front lines or develop scientific breakthroughs in alternative fuels, we can choose to do our part with the resources and opportunities given to us."
The four other Responsible Scholars winners come from Boston University, Johns Hopkins, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and University of Southern California.

The Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars Program for academic year 2009-2010 opens on September 2nd. Students can submit their applications online at www.responsiblescholars.com.
