UNC Student Alexa Nota Receives $10,000 Scholarship from Liberty Mutual's Responsible Scholars Program
BOSTON - Alexa Nota, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Class of 2011, was one of five college undergraduates out of 1,000 applicants to win $10,000 from the Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars program. The Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars program awarded scholarships to five qualified students who initiated or had been actively involved in a service or volunteer program that had a widespread impact on campus or in the community.
"We believe that the more people think and talk about responsibility, the more it can affect how we live our daily lives," said Maura Quinn, University Relations Program Manager for Liberty Mutual Group. "There are thousands of students doing great things on campus and in their communities every day and this scholarship is a way for us to reward students like Alexa for the difference they are making."
Alexa was recognized for raising more than $52,300 and organizing volunteers for 16 weeks of building for Habitat for Humanity. Through her initiative and dedication, Alexa's group brought in 87 percent of the cost of constructing a U.S. Habitat for Humanity home and in May 2007 dedicated the home to a young single mother and her seven-year old daughter.
"Young people are responsible for carrying on the idea of service for others, setting an example for those younger than us to follow, and showing society that we are not just a bunch of reckless kids," said Nota. "My policy is that young men and women should not just sit on the sidelines and watch the action. We have to dive in and make a difference ourselves."
The four other Responsible Scholars winners come from Boston University, Johns Hopkins, University of Southern California, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
The Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars Program for academic year 2009-2010 opens on September 2nd. Students can submit their applications online at www.responsiblescholars.com.
