The NSCS 15th Anniversary Commemorative Scholarship

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars continuously encourages its members to become passionate, engaged citizens. Our definition of an engaged citizen is an individual who takes deliberate action to impact their community in a positive way.

To help commemorate 15 years of inspiring engaged citizenship, we are proud to introduce this $15,000 scholarship which will be awarded to one deserving member who best embodies the spirit of an engaged citizen! Are you that member?

If so, what are you truly passionate about? What is your unique contribution to our society - that thing that only you can do in exactly the way you do it?

Tell us how you have used or plan on using your passion to make a significant contribution to the world. What creative ideas do you plan on using to get your passion out there? How do you plan on connecting your NSCS chapter, school or community to your passion? And how do you plan on mobilizing them to take actions based on your passion, and make a significant impact on society?

Thank you for your patience with the NSCS review process. NSCS would like to thank everyone who applied for the The NSCS 15th Anniversary Commemorative Scholarship. This was one of our most competitive scholarships, which made our decision a very difficult one. All applications went through three rounds of rigorous review. In the end we were only  able to award it to only one applicant.

Congratulations to Hesham Elnagar of Northern Arizona University!

Hesham Elnagar graduated summa cum laude from Northern Arizona University in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts (University Honors) in Music and a minor in Mathematics. He is currently a first-year graduate student studying for a Masters in Music at NAU. In 2007, Hesham cofounded NAU’s National Society of Collegiate Scholars chapter where he served as Executive Vice President. The following year, Hesham served as chapter president.

Currently, Hesham has the honor and privilege to serve the Rotary Club of Green Valley, Rotary District 5300, and the United States of America as an Ambassadorial Scholar for the 2009-2010 scholarship period in New Zealand where he will complete a Masters of Arts in Education. During his anxious wait, he has been researching and developing presentations relating to his Honors Senior Thesis titled “Civic Engagement and Service-learning in American Higher Education.” He will use this research to engage in educational and service related activities in hopes to introduce new pedagogical ideas to various Rotary Clubs, communities, and students of all ages and backgrounds. While abroad, he will work with organizations on community literacy and numeracy projects.

Education and learning has always been one of Hesham’s most important passions. He plans to pursue a career in educational instruction, research, and administration. After his Rotary term in New Zealand and completing his Masters in Music at NAU, Hesham plans to earn a Ph.D. in Education where he wants to focus on student learning, civic engagement, sociology, critical pedagogy, and lifelong learning.
