We are the nation's premier honors organization for first- and second-year college students.
Merit Award
Each year NSCS awards $1,000 scholarships to 52 outstanding new members across the country to help defray the costs of education. Merit Award recipients are selected based on how they honor and inspire academic excellence and engaged citizenship for a lifetime on their campus throughout their undergraduate experience.
Eligibility
- Must create a profile on www.koda.us/nscs. Your KODA profile must be at least 80% completed. (This is indicated on the koda.us website)
- Must be an NSCS member who joined between January 2010 and July 15 2010
- Must have a 3.4 G.P.A
- Must be attending an accredited university
- Please note, all scholarships are disbursed directly to your school
Important Dates
- Opening Date: January 11, 2010
- Closing Date: July 15, 2010
- Recommendations must be postmarked by: July 15, 2010 (Recommendations received with a later postmarked date will not be accepted, no exceptions)
- Recipient Announcement Date: Mid- September 2010

Frequently Asked Questions about the Merit Award
Where can I get my letter of recommendation?
We ask that letter be submitted by anyone who knows you well and can attest to your character, leadership ability, commitment to community service, or academic achievement. This may include an employer, minister, neighbor or friend of the family. It cannot be your parents, guardians or other relatives.
Recommendation letters can be emailed to meritaward [at] nscs [dot] org. with Subject line "Recommender's name for student's name" For Example “ Cynthia Uguru for Kayla Manning"
Can I fax or e-mail my application?
Due to the large number of applicants, we are unable to accept faxes. but we encourage students to e-mail their application. Students can email their Merit Award applications to meritaward [at] nscs [dot] org
Application deadline: I missed the deadline. Can I still apply?
Due to a large number of applicants, we are unable to accommodate any individual deadline extensions.
Recommendation deadline: My recommender sent in their recommendation letter late. Will it still be accepted?
No.it is your responsibility to let the recommender know of the postmark deadlines. No exceptions will be granted.
Do I have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in order to apply for NSCS scholarship
No. NSCS scholarships are open to all legal residents of the United States.
What sort of Notification email will I receive?
A confirmation email is sent automatically to applicants once their application is complete
Applicants will be notified whether/not they are selected as a recipient
Is the $1,000 check made out to me or the school?
The check is made out directly to the school, all scholarship funds are disbursed directly to the school.
When will I get my check?
If you are selected as a Merit Award recipient, your check will be presented to you during your Induction Convocation. Your induction date will be included in your congratulatory letter.
