FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. – Chidinma Achebe is the recipient of the $7,000 Scholar at Sea scholarship. Her exceptional essay submitted to The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) earned her the scholarship to assist with funding of participation in the Semester at Sea program.

Achebe is a native of Nigeria who now resides in West Orange, NJ. She is a Political Science and communications double major at The University of Pennsylvania.

“We’re happy to help Chidinma participate in a program that’ll broaden perspectives,” said Stephen E. Loflin, Executive Director and Founder of NSCS. “Her outstanding application and interview earned her the opportunity to learn in a campus as rich in diversity as each port has to offer.”

The Semester at Sea program allows students to visit nearly a dozen countries while studying on a shipboard campus. Students will experience different cultures and learn about global diversity as they continue their education and work closely with other students from different backgrounds.

Achebe will spend four to six days at each port she will be visiting during her semester at sea voyage and is eager to immerse herself in the cultures and history of each country.

“My experiences in Semester at Sea will surely help me build a web of understanding and enlightenment about different cultures throughout the world, and by so doing help fine tune my leadership abilities and mentally catapult me into a place through which I can affect real change in the world,” said Achebe.

Partnering with the Semester at Sea program, NSCS presents five $2,000 scholarships each summer semester and one $7,000 scholarship for the fall and spring semesters. The University of Virginia academically sponsors this program and grants credit from more than 70 courses.
