Scholar Abroad Spring 2009 Recipient: Andrew M. Adelman

Biography

Andrew Adelman is a third year student at the University of California, Berkeley pursuing a double major in Public Health and Development Studies.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, he grew up in a dynamic and multicultural community.  That upbringing has spurred his interest in cultural experiences.  Having concentrated his Development Studies degree on the Middle East, he has decided to spend the Spring semester of his junior year abroad in Amman, Jordan.  This dynamic and multicultural city, placed in the heart of the Middle East, allows him to gain a first-hand perspective of many of the issues he has been studying.  It also allows him to further his Arabic language skills and gain one-on-one relationships with people around the world.

On his campus, he is an involved member of the student government, an active participant at the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, and a trombonist for the University Wind Ensemble.

For the future, Andrew is looking to further his academic work through law or graduate school to study issues of international development and public health.  Ideally, he would like to find a career within an international aid organization that advocates or works toward increasing health standards for the world’s critical populations.  He appreciates all the support he has received from the NSCS community for his study abroad experience and hopes that his journey will inspire and motivate students.
