Fort Hays State University Chapter Donates to Kansas Domestic Violence Shelter

The Fort Hays State University chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) donated clothes, toiletries, food and other necessary items to the Northwest Kansas Domestic and Sexual Violence Services this holiday season.

At a general meeting in November members gathered to plan a charity event. The question on everyone’s mind: What charity should we chose? Chapter President Holly Miller, a junior Molecular Biology major, led the discussion where it was eventually decided that donating the goods to NKDSVS would have the most impact during the holiday season.

“We thought that donating to NKDSVS would suit the Christmas holiday season to the very best extent that anything could,” said Miller. “It brought us great joy to know that our donations to the less fortunate would provide some happiness and comfort to abused individuals around the time of year that is usually hard to manage, both financially and emotionally, if you're going through tough times.”

It was originally decided that each member provide three items from the NKDSVS Wish List but in most cases, members brought more than four items. More than 15 members, including officers, provided items to donate.

“It feels absolutely amazing to know that we did a wholeheartedly good deed for abused individuals during the Christmas holiday. I personally delivered the donated items to the Hays office, and it was such an honor to do so. They were so thankful and grateful for the large donation we were able to give them,” said Miller.

Miller has been Chapter President since May of 2010 and has also held the office of Social Chair from August 2009-May 2010. The Fort Hays State University was founded in 2000. The chapter’s advisor is
