Butler University Chapter Raises Money for Local Animal Shelter

The members of the Butler University chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) are animal-lovers. Not only do they love them, they love raising money to help them.

The Butler NSCS chapter raised a total of $2,600 for IndyHumane, a local animal shelter by selling t-shirts designed by the chapter officer in charge of community service, Amy Gaisser. The chapter will continue to hold fundraising events to reach their $5,000 goal.

"I was first looking to see where there was currently a real need for help, and when I saw these animals needing medical attention at IndyHumane, it just hit me that they should be our focus for this community service project," said Gaisser, a junior Education major. "I also really love animals, and so do many other NSCS members, so this is something that's very meaningful to us."

Nine animals were able to have costly medical procedures that they needed to become adoptable pets because of the funds the chapter has raised.

The chapter's t-shirts are being sold outside of the Starbucks on Butler's campus and at Petco and Pet Supplies "Plus" stores. The chapter has also been getting help from local animal care facilities like Broad Ripple Animal Clinic & Wellness Center, Woodland Animal Hospital & Pet Lodge, and Sunrise Cafe.

"We are so grateful to these businesses for supporting what we are trying to do, and we do really need their help to reach this goal," said Gaisser." And the help of the Butler and IndyHuman staff members has also been truly amazing!"

The Butler University NSCS chapter was founded in 2000. Glasser serves along the other officers including chapter president Scott Wentz and executive vice president Angela Marie Vaccari.

The chapter's faculty advisor is Eloise Sureau, Ph.D, Assistant Professor French.
