How NSCS Was Founded

It all started over lasagna between Steve Loflin (NSCS' founder) and two friends.

At the time, Steve was the Director of Student Activities for The George Washington University. He was also in charge of freshmen orientation and in working with freshmen, he noticed that, while there were several honors organizations established that recognized students for their academic achievements, none of them invited first and second year students to join.

Not only was this a disappointment because first and second year students weren't honored for scholarship and the positive transition they had made in that challenging time between high school and college, it also was an opportunity to foster a community of academic excellence and provide a connection between students with similar academic goals and pursuits.

In discussing this over lasagna with his two friends, they asked why Steve didn't just start a new organization that does just that. When he really thought about it--why not?

After much hard work in getting support behind NSCS and getting it approved through GW's administration, his idea became reality and on April 30, 1994, NSCS held its very first induction at The George Washington University.

Today, in our 15th anniversary year, NSCS has over 700,000 members at over 250 chapters throughout the United States, including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia - we are in all of the 50 states. We have more than 1500 officers. We have more than 50 NSCS partners. We have more than 20 full-time national employees.

Who knew that an idea fifteen years ago talked about over lasagna could have a positive impact on thousands of people and be such a success?
