History of NSCS

1993

  • Fall: Steve Loflin, then-director of Student Activities at The George Washington University,  has conversation with two friends Chris Ferguson and Erin Corrigan about the possibility of starting a national honors organization for first- and second-year college students

 

1994

  • 30 April: First NSCS Induction at The George Washington University

 

1995

  • Spring: NSCS flagship program-Planning for College Success launched
  • Spring: Second NSCS chapter; the University of Virginia
  • Spring: Third NSCS chapter;  the University of South Carolina

 

1996

  • Spring: Three new chapters:
    • The Florida State University
    • The University of California, Los Angeles
    • University of Delaware
  • July: First NSCS Leadership Summit-Washington, D.C.


1997

  • Spring: NSCS holds Inductions welcoming members at three new chapters

    • The University of Texas, Austin
    • The University of Maryland, College Park
    • Carnegie Mellon University
  • July: Second NSCS Leadership Summit-San Diego, CA

 

1998

  • July: Third NSCS Leadership Summit-Boston, MA
  • September: First National Student Representative elected to NSCS Board of Directors-Susie Albrecht
  • October: The NSCS Honorary Board of Regents established

 

1999

  • January-June: NSCS goes from 9 to 43 chapters
  • Spring: Cornell University chapter established
  • July: Fourth NSCS Leadership Summit-Chicago, IL

 

2000

  • Spring: Dartmouth chapter established
  • July: Fifth NSCS Leadership Summit-Los Angeles, CA

 

2001

  • Spring: Princeton University chapter established
  • July: Sixth NSCS Leadership Summit-Orlando, FL
  • September: First NSCS National Leadership Council elected (1st president-Andrew Call)

 

2002

  • Spring: NSCS Professional Leadership Council established
  • Spring: University of Pennsylvania chapter established
  • July: Seventh NSCS Leadership Summit-Austin, TX

 

2003

  • July: Eighth NSCS Leadership Summit-Washington, D.C.

 

2004

  • February: NSCS joins the Association of College Honor Societies, an accrediting organizations for
    honor societies
  • Spring: University of Puerto Rico chapter established
  • Spring NSCS establishes its 200th chapter at the University of Hawaii Manoa
  • 30 April: NSCS celebrates its tenth anniversary
  • July: Ninth NSCS Leadership Summit-Washington, D.C.

 

2005

  • Spring: With the establishment of a chapter at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks; NSCS now has chapters in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico
  • July: Tenth NSCS Leadership Summit-Denver, CO

 

2006

  • July: Eleventh NSCS Leadership Summit-Louisville, KY
