How many submissions can I send?
You can only send two submissions in total per issue.

What kind of submissions are you looking for?
Our guidelines are below:

  • Popular culture: We’re looking for reflective essays on television, film, advertising and the like. For example, why a certain genre of movies has gained popularity. Feel free to interview experts for your piece, but be sure to include their contact information so that we can verify your sources. Word limit: 500-2,000 words
  • Autobiographical/ Slice of life: We like reading specific short pieces that deal with experiences in your life. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic incident-- just a small one that changed you in some way. Word limit: 500-1000 words.
  • College life: Universal topics that affect college students across the country. For example, being 21 years old and unsure about which career to pursue, or reflections on a study abroad. We’re not looking for how-to’s or “10 things about...” pieces. Keep your piece to 500-1000 words.
  • Short story: Word count: 1,000-2,500 words
  • Poetry:Word count: Poetry 6-60 lines.
  • Art: We’re expanding our definition to include comic strips that reflect social and cultural issues. We also accept photography, and illustrations. We will not accept fan art. Images should be saved in JPEG, GIF, TIFF, EPS, or BMP format. No word documents please! For use in electronic communications, images should be no more than 500 pixels wide by 500 pixels high.

Where should I send my submission and what should I include?

  • Send your submission as an attachment to collegiatescholar [at] nscs [dot] org.
  • Include the waiver at the bottom of this Web page in the body of your e-mail. Submissions without waivers will not be considered.
  • Include your name, the title of your work and the genre, in the title of your Word document and in the body of your document. Also include your university's name in the body of the document.

Example of a title: John-Smith_Immigration-reform_Politics Or Jane-Smith-Running-Art

How will I know if I’m published?

Winners will be informed via e-mail. In addition, they will receive a press release that they can forward to their college or local newspapers.

Can my work be disqualified?

Yes. If your work does not include the waiver below, it will not be considered for publication.

We also reserve the right to disqualify work that includes sexually explicit content, drug-use or other illegal activity.

Certification

Submission to NSCS of written work or artwork via e-mail certifies that the work provided is not protected under copyright or trademark law or that the submitter either a) is the original author or owner to the submitted work, or b) has expressed permission from the original author or owner, and may grant NSCS the right to reproduce the work for the submitted purpose. NSCS shall not be held responsible for any claims resulting from submitter’s failure to disclose accurate ownership of rights or permission for reproduction.

Waiver

In order for submissions to be considered for publication, we require all submitters to complete a waiver form attesting to the originality and ownership of each. Failure to do so will result in your work being taken out of consideration for posting. Include the following paragraph in the body of your message:

“I, (include full name), hereby verify that the written or visual work I am submitting electronically for publication in The Collegiate Scholar is my original work or I have permission of the original owner of the work to submit it for online publication to NSCS. The sending of this e-mail serves as permission to grant NSCS the right to reproduce my submitted work for the purpose of inclusion in The Collegiate Scholar. NSCS shall not be held responsible for any claims resulting from my failure to disclose accurate ownership of rights or permission for reproduction of the attached work. I understand that failure to include this paragraph in my e-mail to NSCS will result in my submission not being considered for publication.”
