For Immediate Release

Washington DC - Saint Xavier University alumnus Alexander Flowers (Biology, 2004) is the 2009 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Flowers will receive a $1,000 award from The National Society of Collegiate Scholars for outstanding effort and exemplary achievement.

National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is an honors organization for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores at 240 universities across the United States.

Flowers was chosen for this award because of his dedication to growing the NSCS chapter he founded on the SXU campus in 2001. As chapter president, he oversaw all service projects, implemented fundraising drives, connected the chapter with campus officials and helped to establish a successful mentoring program for middle school students.

Because of the outstanding programs he put in place, the SXU NSCS chapter received the New Chapter of the Year Award at their first Induction Ceremony in 2001.

Flowers has since graduated from SXU and now attends graduate school at Roosevelt University where he has begun plans to found a chapter of NSCS on the Roosevelt campus.

Distinguished Service Award applicants are required to complete an essay explaining how they made an impact in their NSCS chapter or within NSCS as a whole.

Flowers will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to attend NSCS' annual Convention and accept the $1,000 award and a congratulatory plaque.
