About the National Leadership Council

The National Leadership Council is a special opportunity for a select number of members to serve as an advisory board to the NSCS national staff and Board of Directors.

Ten NSCS members will be granted the opportunity to serve on the 2010-2011 National Leadership Council. NLC members are chosen based on their dedication, service, and commitment to NSCS.  Leadership, academic excellence, and community involvement are other strong traits that each NLC member must exhibit and continue to demonstrate throughout their term.

The Council will collect feedback from their campuses to improve the NSCS experience for all members and will speak at their chapter’s Induction Convocation in the fall. NLC members will serve as peer resources to chapter officers and the national member engagement team. Serving on this prestigious advisory board gives each member valuable experience working with a national program and an incredible chance to contribute to the success of NSCS

Two members of the council will be selected to serve a one-year term on the NSCS Board of Directors as the President and Executive Vice President of the Council.  These members will be chosen by NSCS and the current 2009-10 NLC President. 

*All 2009-10 NLC considering a position on the 2010-11 Council must reapply.

Responsibilities for all members of the NLC:

  • Represent the NSCS national office at local inductions on an as-needed basis.
  • Facilitate a minimum of one focus group on campus with members during the school year. Focus groups will serve as a feedback and information compiling session for the national office and will be established based on the current informational needs.
  • Commit at minimum 20 hours a month to NSCS NLC duties in order to review scholarships, participate in conference calls, committee calls and other relevant responsibilities. 
  • Attend NLC conference calls each month.
  • Participate in the selection process for national NSCS scholarships, including the NSCS NLC award and NSCS Chapter Officer Award.
  • As the national student face of NSCS, members of the council will actively represent NSCS on their local campus, within the student body and administration, increasing NSCS awareness and recognition.
  • Actively participate as a positive NSCS presence within the internet and other social media. [i.e. Responding to questions and comments posted on internet forums and blogs pertaining to NSCS]  
  • Serve as a resource for other chapter officers within your region and your Manager, Member Engagement from the national office.
  • Take on responsibilities and initiatives as interested or as delegated by the NLC national office Advisor, President or Executive Vice President.

Responsibilities of the President and Executive Vice President of the NLC:

NLC President

  • Attend both the fall and spring meetings of the NSCS Board of Directors during his/her one year term.
  • Report on feedback collected by Council members to the Board of Directors during the fall and spring meetings.
  • Serve as an active member of the Board with full voting rights during his/her one year term.
  • Work with the Executive Vice President to lead the rest of the NLC in meetings, brainstorming, and action.
  • Complete all other responsibilities of an active member of the Council.

NLC Executive Vice President

  • Attend both the fall and spring meetings of the NSCS Board of Directors during their one year term.
  • Report on feedback collected by Council members to the Board of Directors during the fall and spring meetings.
  • Serve as a non-voting member of the Board during their one year term. In the absence of the President, serve as a Board member with full voting rights.
  • Work with the NLC President to lead the rest of the NLC in meetings, brainstorming, and activity.
  • Complete all other responsibilities of an active member of the Council.

NLC Commitment

NLC members are held to the highest of personal and moral standards as they are to embody the ideals of NSCS and be personal reflections of what other scholars should aspire to. Therefore, personally, academically and professionally, NLC members must continually conduct themselves in a manner befitting a scholar. Furthermore, any actions by an NLC member deemed as questionable behavior, unfulfilled duties and/or lack participation, as aforementioned in the Responsibilities of NLC Members section of this page, is considered grounds for dismissal. 

Qualifications for all NLC applicants: 

  • Meet the minimum 3.4 GPA requirement (must include unofficial transcript with application)
  • Must be an active member of NSCS
  • Plan to be on campus for the entire academic school year
  • Maintain an active NSCS profile to better serve the NSCS community (have an updated NSCS profile, post a resume on www.koda.us/nscs, and actively utilize the Facebook Fan pages)
  • Able to commit at minimum 20 hours a month to NSCS NLC duties in order to review scholarships, participate in committee calls and other relevant responsibilities.  
  • Must have a desire to engage others and contribute to the overall success of NSCS
  • Deadline is February 26, 2010 at 11:59 PM (all local time zones accepted)
