Location
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located in Troy, New York, on a 275-acre hilltop campus overlooking the Hudson River. In the midst of a culturally rich population center surrounded by the Adirondack, Catskill, Berkshire, and Green mountains, the Rensselaer campus is only a few hours by car from Boston, New York City, and Montreal. Within easy driving distance from campus, Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff enjoy world-class alpine and cross-country skiing, hiking, camping, sailing, biking, golf, whitewater kayaking, and more.
Research
The scientific and technical themes that are changing the world—biotechnology, energy security, information technology, and nanotechnology—are at the center of Rensselaer’s research focus:
World-Class Research Facilities
Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies
The spirit of exploration and discovery is alive in the multidisciplinary research underway in this center. The possibilities for humankind are breathtaking and lie at the intersection of the life sciences, information sciences, engineering, mathematics, and the physical sciences. To capitalize on this power and promise, Rensselaer has built a 218,000-square foot Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, bringing together talented faculty and students in leading-edge laboratories to solve issues and make discoveries that will save lives.
Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center
An experimental media and performing arts center will showcase our distinctive programs in the electronic arts, while providing facilities that will broaden campus discourse and allow us to fully engage the larger community in the performing arts. This facility, which will open in 2008, represents a major step toward enriching the resources for the cultural, intellectual, and personal development of our students.
Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI)
Rensselaer, IBM, and New York State are joined in a $100 million partnership to create the world’s most powerful university-based computing center, the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI), to advance the science of nanotechnology. The fundamental goal of CCNI is to help significantly accelerate industrial investments in New York State in the area of nanotechnology and nanoelectronics by addressing fundamental computational aspects related to nanodevices and nanoscale processes.
